Casa Prispa is a pioneering solar-powered house designed and built by Romanian students for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 competition in Madrid.
Key Design Features
It spans 80.4 square meters with a traditional \”prispa\” (porch) that provides passive shading in summer while optimizing solar gain and photovoltaic mounting in winter; the envelope includes buffer zones like storage and a vestibule for thermal regulation.
Natural materials such as wood, clay plasters, and 24 cm mineral wool insulation promote sustainability, alongside triple-glazed Low-E windows with shutters for light and heat control.
Energy and Systems
Powered exclusively by solar energy via high-efficiency 250W SUNERG polycrystalline panels (up to 8 kW total), it features solar thermal collectors, heat recovery from exhaust air, radiant panels for sub-zero heating, and greywater recycling for irrigation.
LED lighting with adjustable intensity and smart HVAC ensure minimal consumption; post-competition, it\’s relocated as a family home in Bacău producing surplus energy.
Performance and Impact
Romania\’s entry ranked 9th overall out of 18, excelling in energy efficiency (2nd place), and costs under 70,000 EUR including all tech, demonstrating affordable net-zero living without utility bills.
